Maitake Mushroom

The maitake mushroom is a an interesting looking fungi.  I recently went into the snowy mountains of Japan to visit the company that first discovered how to grow Maitake mushrooms indoors.

I took a few pictures:

Holding a living Maitake Mushroom, still growing on the substrate block

In this photo I am about to harvest this Maitake mushroom, which is bigger than my head.
The white part is the mycelium (roots) of the mushroom totally grown over a trade secret mix of wood chips, sawdust and other food-stuffs that are devoured by Maitake mycelium.
This was really fun for me because I have tried to grow Maitake mushrooms myself in a similar manner. But they alwasy just turned into something looking like a small brain. And never grew to their full mature size.
The worker gave me some plastic gloves and informed me (in Japanese) to grab underneath the mushroom and gently rock it back and forth while pulling up. I could feel a tearing of tissue sensation and then the whole thing popped up.
This nex photo is the AFTER shot:

I just picked this massive Maitake mushroom and I'm so proud of my new baby (the mushroom)

Here you can see that it is removed from the block.
I bought this one for about $10 and took it home. We were eating Maitake recipes for the next three days.
Guaranteed we got our beta glucan optimal doses on those days icon smile Maitake Mushroom
Any other mushroom geeks out there can probably guess how fun an event this was for me.
And for non-geeks, the flavor was delicious!

Best Maitake Extract

How to find the best Maitake extract.

As you’ve probably already found out, there are a lot of Maitake extracts and Maitake supplements on the market.

And it is a serious challenge to understand what exactly they are selling and if it is the best value and effect.

Even for myself, after a decade of mushroom research in the laboratory, I still have a hard time figuring out what some companies are selling. Especially the biggest companies. It seems that I’m going in an endless circle trying to understand what is in their product and how it is made.

It is not an accident that many companies make it tough to figure out how they are producing the products. Where the mushrooms were grown. How they are quantifying thier claims. And what exact research has been done on THEIR product. NOT on other Maitake products which they try to appear similar to.

A major problem I see daily are companies that “sandwich” their small research results between major research done on other extracts. Making it look like all of that research was done on their product. It’s a clever trick that even some scientific journals did not notice before allowing the publishing of weak research.  Every science journal claims to be “peer reviewed”. But things slip throught the cracks.

Anyways what I’m trying to say is, if you are getting confused when trying to compare products and their research support, IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!

It comes down to business. And companies trying to make the biggest profit by selling cheap Chinese extracts and making them appear to be high value. It’s good business on the sellers’ side.

So the topic of this post is how to find the best Maitake extract.

Luckily there are a few simple ways to avoid low value/high price products.

1) There is only one Maitake extract which is patented from initial discoveries in Japan and then studied and published in American human clinical trials.

It is patent 5,854,404.

2) There are quite a few companies that sell this patented extract, branded under various names. So it is quite easy to compare quantity on a milligram basis across different companies’ products. So we can compare clearly how many milligrams are in a whole box/bottle and divide by the total price. To get the price per milligram.

Price per milligram is the best way to compare these patented Maitake extracts.

3) The research on all Maitake patent 5,854,404 extract is the same. Because it is the same extract. That makes it simple to find the best product.

Now that you know which maitake extract patent is the authentic one and how to compare price on a milligram basis, please go take a look HERE and try to find a better Maitake product (price, quantity or dose wise)

Bruce 227x300 About

Hi there.

I want to thank you for taking the guts, time and energy to look into Maitake and why you might want to eat it or take it’s extracts.

I have been studying mushrooms and their health benefits for over a decade. And after moving to Japan, I have been able to learn a lot more about the fantastic effects of the Maitake Mushroom and its extracts and fractions.

My wife got stage 3B lung cancer, and has been taking a type of Maitake fraction developed in Japan, for the last 5 years. We believe it helped her in many ways.

I was fortunate enough to meet the man who discovered and patented the maitake extract  (unfortunately the original name of this fraction has been trademarked by a company in America. And is just known now as patent 5,854,404 maitake extract). He is the Dean of Kobe Pharmacuetical Unversity, in Japan. He and his laboratory of professional scientists have been making non-stop discoveries about the effects of this maitake fraction for over a decade. The scientific evidence is growing worldwide.

I was so lucky to able to spend a short time in this Professor’s laboratories as an assistant to one of their researchers. During this time, I could see first hand the amazing effects of Maitake.

I wrote this blog to help others discover Maitake and spread the word to their friends and family. And to anyone who could benefit from it’s support.
